1What is the DELE A2 exam and what is it for?
The DELE A2 diploma (Diploma of Spanish as a Foreign Language) is an official qualification issued by the Instituto Cervantes on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of Education. It certifies that the candidate has basic linguistic competence in Spanish, corresponding to level A2 of the CEFR.
Having an A2 level means you are able to:
- Understand common phrases and everyday vocabulary about immediate areas of interest (basic personal/family info, shopping, local places, employment).
- Communicate in simple, routine tasks requiring a direct and straightforward exchange of information.
- Describe in simple terms aspects of your background, immediate environment, and immediate needs.
2Official structure of the 4 exam test modules
The exam consists of 4 language skills divided into two independent groups. The maximum total score is 100 points (25 points per test).
Written Skills
Test 1: Reading Comprehension (25 pts)
60 minutes · 5 tasks · 25 questions
Regulations, brief advertisements, personal correspondence, informational notices, and simple news articles.
Test 3: Written Expression (25 pts)
45 minutes · 2 writing tasks
Task 1: Short note or postcard (30 to 40 words). Task 2: Personal letter or essay (70 to 80 words).
Oral Skills
Test 2: Listening Comprehension (25 pts)
40 minutes · 5 tasks · 25 questions
Public PA announcements, answering machine messages, everyday dialogues, and short radio interviews.
Test 4: Oral Expression & Interaction (25 pts)
12 min prep + 12 min exam
Task 1: Personal monologue (2-3 min). Task 2: Photograph description (2 min). Task 3: Guided dialogue (2-3 min).
3How is the exam scored? The «Pass» (Apto) rule
Caution! You cannot simply average the total score
To be awarded a PASS (Apto) in DELE A2, you must score a minimum of 30 points in EACH of the two groups:
- Group 1 (Reading + Writing): Minimum 30.0 out of 50.0 points.
- Group 2 (Listening + Speaking): Minimum 30.0 out of 50.0 points.
Crucial example: If a candidate scores 48 points in Group 1, but only 28 points in Group 2 (total 76 out of 100), the overall result is a FAIL (No Apto). Both groups must be passed independently.
4DELE A2 and Spanish Citizenship by Residence
Under Spanish Law 19/2015, individuals applying for Spanish citizenship by residence must provide proof of:
- CCSE Test: Constitutional and Sociocultural Knowledge of Spain (25 multiple-choice questions).
- DELE A2 Diploma or higher: Proving basic command of the Spanish language.
Who is exempt from taking the DELE A2 exam?
- Citizens of Spanish-speaking countries (Colombia, Argentina, Mexico, Venezuela, Peru, Cuba, Chile, etc.).
- Minors under 18 years of age and legally incapacitated individuals.
- Individuals who completed official secondary education (ESO, Bachillerato or FP) in Spain.
Important: Applicants from non-Spanish-speaking countries (such as Morocco, UK, Pakistan, Algeria, Ukraine, etc.) must pass the DELE A2 exam.
510 Golden Tips from Examiners to Pass
Train with a real stopwatch
Time management is essential in reading (60 min) and writing (45 min). Practice writing and proofreading in under 40 minutes.
Count your words in written essays
If asked for 70–80 words, do not write 40 or 150. Aim precisely for 75 to 85 words.
Master essential A2 connectives
Structure your sentences using: porque (because), pero (but), también (also), además (furthermore), primero, después, finalmente.
In the speaking test: never stay silent!
If you did not understand a question, ask naturally: «¿Puede repetir, por favor?». Never stay completely quiet.
Read questions before the audio starts
Use the pre-audio pause to underline keywords in options A, B, and C so you know exactly what to listen for.
Differentiate the 3 essential past tenses
Master Pretérito Perfecto (hoy he comido), Indefinido (ayer viajé), and Imperfecto (cuando era niño...).
Use a structured photo description method
Follow this exact order: 1) Location, 2) People, 3) Clothing, 4) Actions (estar + gerund), and 5) Weather.
Do not worry about your accent
Having a foreign accent is completely normal and carries no penalty. Examiners grade clarity, fluency, and message comprehension.
Beware of reading trap words
Incorrect options often copy exact words from the text to mislead you. The correct option frequently uses synonyms.
Take full mock exams before exam day
A 3-hour exam requires sustained mental stamina. Full simulations give you the pacing and confidence needed to succeed.
6The 3 mistakes that cause the most failures
1. Memorizing a rigid speech for the oral test
If the examiner notices a recited speech, they will intervene with spontaneous questions which could cause you to freeze.
2. Omitting required points in the writing tasks
Prompts provide 3 to 4 required bullet points. Omitting even one deducts points in task achievement.
3. Leaving unanswered questions in reading or listening
Wrong answers do NOT penalize points in DELE. Always make an educated guess if unsure before time expires.
